Dealing with Homesickness
Being an on the road truck driver means dealing with being homesick on a regular basis. Some drivers don't see their homes for months and this type of separation can effect your state of mind emotionally. Dealing with homesickness effectively and efficiently means understanding what homesickness is and how to recognize it, why you feel homesick, and how you can make it better.
Homesickness is simply the distress caused by being separated from home. Symptoms of being homesick include nostalgia, grief, depression, anxiety, etc. So if you're far from home and feeling down in the dumps, you're probably homesick and you may not even realize it.
Feeling homesick is a natural human response and there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. Whether you're a student going off to dorm at college for the first time, or a truck driver making his 100th run, it is completely normal; and its important for everyone to know that. As humans we get used to the things around us that make us happy. When we are removed from those things our brains go haywire and don't know what to do. So we start to feel sad, anxious, etc. because we are taken out of what we know as comfort.
There are many ways to deal with homesickness especially if you're someone who has to deal with being on the road for long periods of time. The important thing to recognize when trying to treat your homesickness is what you miss most about home. To some people its their family and being away from them for long periods of time can cause major distress. To make things a little easier in this arena you can turn to technology and call or even video chat with your family members on a regular basis. Keeping up to date with whats going on at home while you're away can definitely help with some of that separation anxiety. If you don't really have family that you're missing, then you may just be simply missing the comforts of your own home. If this is the case, bring some things from home with you and decorate your car, truck, hotel room, wherever you'll be spending most of your time while away. Bringing things you know make you comfortable at home like your favorite blanket, specific air freshener you use, favorite scented candle, etc. can put your mind back into the state of bliss you feel while at home.
Homesickness is very common and may be affecting you even if you don't realize it. Its important to understand homesickness, especially if you're an on the road driver, why it happens, and how to prevent it. Following these steps can help you raise your comfort levels while away from home so try some next time you're away from home!
